Charlie le Mindu

Charlie le Mindu’s A/W 2010 collection celebrates the art of haute-coiffure. This term recognises his skill as a hair artiste and blends it with some very esoteric designs. His models walked down the runway adorned in layers of hair and black lace, with nods towards Charlie’s love of taxidermy and the macabre evident in his collection.

We had the pleasure of interviewing him recently and he discussed his love of wigs and how they can change how the body is perceived as whole. ‘ I love the style of Queen and Mohammed Al Fayed! Beyonce is fierce and always creates daring looks for her videos and stage appearances’, he told us, and his creations were equally fierce and striking.

I can see influences of Nagi Noda in his work, as the hair pieces (created from wefts of natural hair and a Gothic colour palette) created striking visual images, with the hair teased into unusual shapes. The models themselves looked liked they’d just stepped off the set of Avatar, with heavy blue eyeshadow , glittery blue lips and spray painted bodies.

The collection really pushed the boundaries of fashion and beauty as it made the viewers assess just how much these aspects complement each other as the beauty pieces used here create the look rather than enhance it, which is a lovely take on how style has evolved.

The use of real hair in his creations create an animalistic effect on the models, with hair seeming to portray the models as wild creatures, untamed and unchallenged by everyday life. Charlie is the Fudge Brand Ambassador and his love of styling was evident in the interesting designs and GaGa-esque hats of hair. The use of religious iconography in the collection also played into today’s trend for vampires, and heralded a return toexperimentation in the beautysphere.
