Vivienne Westwood’s A/W 10  featured models adorned in delightful fairy-inspired dresses, with pageboy twists and peasant blouses. This panto-esque look was recreated in the hair and makeup which featured dramatic eyes, bow lips and waffle textured hair. Waffle style hair is a new take on the old fashioned trend of crimping, and used to create a masculine yet soft style for the head.

Sam McKnight, Global Ambassador for Pantene Pro-V, helped create this look, which she designated ‘Prince Charming’, due to its androgynous feel.

Here are her tips on recreating this style at home.

1. Comb Pantene Pro-V Volume & Body Mousse through the hair to add texture then blow dry.
2. Part hair in the centre and roughly divide into five sections, taking hair from the upper layer only, about 2 inches above the ear. Braid each of the five sections tightly, starting a couple of inches from the roots.
3. Once braided, mist each section with a protective layer of Pantene Pro-Volume and Body Hairspray
4. Using straightening irons, work along the braid, from roots to ends, pressing the braid between the plates of the iron to dry.
5. Undo the braids and brush through, then gather hair into a loose ponytail, low on the neck.
6. Fold the ends on the ponytail under and tuck under the hair at the nape, pinning with grips to secure strongly.
7. Finish the look by smoothing over with Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Moisture Balance leave in Conditioner on hair from the parting, to flatten the hair on the top of the head. Allow loose tendrils to escape giving the appearance of beautiful imperfection.

Sara Blonstein is a major events organiser and played a substantial role in London Fashion Week this year. She was the brains behind the Fashion East show held in the vaults of Somerset House and it was her vision that saw the once rat-infested space transformed into a fashion extravaganza. Sara has  worked in the industry for over 20 years, with major clients that have included MTV, Channel 4 and Vivienne Westwood. We managed to catch up with her backstage and asked her how she stayed so glamorous under pressure.

Q. What are your fashion week essential products?

Good bright lipstick that doesn’t “gather”-, bottles of water, good quality bronzer and chewing gum.

Q. Which celebrity beauty style do you love and which do you hate?

I just love natural looking women who don’t have to try too hard- I worked with Carmen del Orifice recently. she was 70 – no surgery- grey white hair- beautiful!

Q. What’s your beauty routine?

Rose oil baths and good holidays out of polluted areas. I have much fewer carbs as I get older and find that being in love really helps me look good!

Q. What are your five favourite beauty products?

Estee Lauder Verite cleanser,  Crème de la Mer  face cream, L’occitane 100% pure Shea butter, Bobbi Brown lid liner in black, Illamasqua copper and gold cream eye shadow and YSL burgundy with gold flecks lippy.

Q. And your favourite haircare products?

Cowshed or Six Senses shampoo and conditioner!

Q. What do you think about cosmetic surgery- would you ever have it?

Maybe. ask me in 10 years!

Q. What has been your biggest beauty mistake?

Short hair- don’t do it!

Aveda has a strong presence backstage at New York Fashion Week as many of the models strutting their have had their hair teased and tousled with Aveda products. The models flouncing down the John Patrick Organic A/W 10 runway all sported Brigitte Bardot  style ‘poufs’ in the hair, chic up-dos that were created with strong lashings of hairspray and numerous amounts of kirby grips. The style was a cross between secretary chic and boardroom bigwig, and presented and elegant yet powerful female silhouette, with  the exposed neck suggesting vulnerability whilst the twisted up tresses denoted empowerment and attitude.

Stylist Odile Gilbert was in charge of  teasing the tresses of these models.

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

“John Patrick and I were inspired by the idea of a young, teenage girl seeing a gorgeous, Brigitte Bardot-esque hair look in a magazine or on TV and trying it on themselves. It’s very spontaneous, cute, and modern. The look involves a messy pouf tamed by Aveda Control Force Hair Spray and a French twist in the back. The volume is impulsive and a little undone.”

Here’s her step by step guide on achieving this look.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK:

1. Brush through hair and prep with Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam to add body and shine. Use a comb to create a left side part.

2. Divide hair into four sections: sides, back, and top. Fold the top section over the face and clip back to separate.

3. Backcomb the back section of hair with a brush to create messy volume. Spray liberally with Aveda Control Force Hair Spray for maximum hold.

4. Create an anchor by crossing bobby pins horizontally across the middle of the back section of hair, just below the crown of the head.

5. Using large hair pins, attach a hairdresser’s sponge at the crown, where bobby pins are anchored.

6. Cross the right section of backcombed hair over to the left, pinning over the hairdresser’s sponge with large hair pins. Repeat with the left section of backcombed hair, bringing it to right. Take all remaining hair in the back section and twirl to the left to create a French twist. Secure the twist at the nape of the neck with hair pins, creating a tail of loose hair draped over the shoulder.

7. Set aside a portion of hair to fall in front of the left ear, and brush remaining top section of hair over the hairdresser’s sponge.  Pin it into the French twist to create a “pouf.” Pull lightly with fingers to create loose, spontaneous volume. Spray with Aveda Control Force Hair Spray.

8. Leave wisps of free falling hair in front of the left ear, and loosely pin remaining pieces above the right ear. Finish with Aveda Control Force Hair Spray.
